Improve Social Media Engagement in Six Simple Steps

January 30, 2021

In a world where your ideal customer’s feed is overflowing and attention spans are fading fast, it has never been more important to make sure your social media engagement strategy has a strong foundation. Social media is elevated by out-of-the-box thinking, but even the most creative campaigns can run into trouble if marketing fundamentals are overlooked.

What is social media engagement?

Social media engagement refers to the likes, comments, and shares your content receives. While they can make us all feel giddy it is best to think of them in relation to followers. Taken together they show your audience engagement which is a great indicator of the health of your audience.

Before you begin making changes, it’s important to know where your engagement is now so you can measure the impact of your efforts. Once you have established your benchmarks, here are six steps to follow to help improve social media engagement.

Six Steps to Improve Social Media Engagement

  1. Optimize your profiles. Make sure you use the same profile image on each network (and on your website), use consistent handles, use the right keywords in your profile, and make sure your links lead people where you want them to go.
  2. Include CTA’s in your posts. You’ve got your audience's attention, don’t waste it by not telling them how they can help you. Ask your fans to share, sign up, book now, or comment and watch them deliver.
  3. Create a post schedule that works for you. The algorithm rewards consistency, and so will your followers. A big part of scheduling is finding the right time for your audience. Each app provides insights about when your followers are on, but you will need to experiment with peak and off-peak hours to maximize the impact of your content.
  4. Pin posts to the top of the page. You have stellar content that is bringing people to your page. Make sure they see the most important piece of content you have. Selecting a post to pin is about knowing your priorities and allowing your fans to support your brand.
  5. Respond in a timely and conversational manner. Marketing is no longer a one-way effort. Both your supporters and detractors will be talking about your brand in comments, check-ins, DM’s, and mentions, so make sure you engage with them.
  6. Ask your fans to turn on notifications. Most people are following brands, and with all the content being created every minute, it’s easy to miss something. Your superfans won’t want to miss out and will be happy to turn notifications on for your brand.
