case study

The Fresh Grocer

The Fresh Grocer supermarkets, owned by The Burns Family, operate multiple supermarket locations in the Metropolitan Philadelphia area. They teamed up with Flashlight Marketing to introduce a variety of new plant-based product offerings to their consumers.

Consumer demands for plant-based products had increased dramatically especially with younger consumers in The Fresh Grocer’s primary trading areas. Consumer trends toward plant based diets are attributed to shopper alignment with protecting animals, environmental reasons and health factors. The Fresh Grocer felt it was important to provide their customers with a wide range of these products to help enhance the shopper experience and promote healthier lifestyles, while also giving the grocer a competitive advantage in their trading areas. The Fresh Grocer brought in these new plant-based product offerings, but after one month of unimpressive sales, teamed up with Flashlight Marketing to develop a strategic marketing plan to successfully introduce the new plant-based offerings to their customers in a way that positively impacted gross profits and top line sales.

Flashlight Marketing first assisted in the development of internal communications to help educated Fresh Grocer’s associate base about the new innovation in plant-based alternatives to gain employee buy-in and allow employees to act as brand ambassadors for the new products. Our team then strategized with category managers to identify the best locations within each store to merchandise these new products. Sign kits were designed, produced and installed with fresh and impactful creative to help draw attention to the new items. We collaborated with the product vendors to support in-store product demonstrations during peak times of business. Additionally, a robust digital advertising and social media campaign was also launched at the same time as in-store launch to help drive awareness to existing customers and help acquire new customers who would be incentivized to shop with us because of the new offering.

In less than two months, plant-based category sales increased 700% and still showing weekly continued growth. The supermarket will further expand their plant-based offerings with the support of Flashlight’s strategic marketing program.

Tavola Restaurant + Bar

Tavola Restaurant + Bar is a full service restaurant open to the public daily located in Springfield Township, Delaware County. The venue is popular for its expansive outdoor patio dining with golf course views, multiple fire pits, brick oven specialties and signature cocktails. The restaurant was able to reopen after months of being shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic and partnered with Flashlight Marketing to ensure the re-opening was a success.

After the pandemic forced restaurants to shut down completely followed by a period of only being able to open for take-out, Tavola Restaurant + Bar needed help to prepare their venue to align with the strict reopening guidelines set forth by the state to be positioned to open for outdoor dining. They also needed help to communicate to guests that Tavola is a safe outdoor dining option, all while being under both time and budget constraints.

Flashlight Marketing worked with the leadership team at Tavola to stay up to date with industry and government affairs and researched best practices worldwide to help design and inform their re-opening strategy. Flashlight designed, produced and installed new signage, disposable menus, and staff training collateral, reimagined the table setting, optimized the mobile website experience, and utilized the website, email marketing and social media to communicate with customers to promote the outdoor dining space AND reinforce health and safety protocols. Media outreach was also executed in conjunction with the reopening that gained significant earned media coverage.

Tavola Restaurant + Bar filled all available reservations during their re-opening weekend, and by the end of the month, weekly sales were outpacing year over year numbers, even with capacity limits and other mitigation factors. Guest reviews were extremely positive and commended Tavola for their ability to provide an exceptional and safe outdoor dining experience. Website traffic skyrocketed with user sessions increasing 625% compared to the same month the prior year, new guest rewards membership grew by over 800% compared to the average monthly trend, and the earned media coverage generated hundreds of thousands of impressions and increased brand awareness for the restaurant.
